“I can just be my authentic self when I’m at Afropunk,” explains artist and actress Janelle Monáe (@janellemonae), who performed for the fourth time at the Brooklyn, New York, music festival last weekend. “I’ve grown with the festival, the audience. I remember my first time performing — there were maybe a few hundred people. Now there are thousands of folks from all over the world. As a black artist and someone who strives to be as creative as possible, they’ve made me feel heard and loved and seen and celebrated.” ✨
