“I always loved the smell of earth and rain,” says 26-year-old Rida (@chalk.asmr), who lives in Chicago and is originally from Pakistan. “When I was in school, the chalk sticks smelled like rain, especially when they were wet.” She bought the same brand at home, would pulverize them, add water, make a new shape, let them dry and repeat the process over and over. “It was my happy place, and a secret hobby that I loved,” she says.
Rida didn’t know anyone shared her passion, until years later when she found Instagram’s #ASMR community. “I was utterly shocked,” she says, and then she started making videos of her own. Today, helping followers who deal with anxiety is Rida’s favorite part of the process. “ASMR helps me relax, and when people message me, telling me that they wait for my videos every day, it literally makes my day. This makes it so much more rewarding.”
